The other day I got on the elevator at work and heard a conversation. "The food in the cafeteria is ok," said the first guy. "The cafeteria sucks. It's too expensive." said the other one. "I don't want to pay six dollars for a breakfast sandwich."
Now, this was an exaggeration. I had a four-dollar omelet in a takeout box with me at the time. The conversation frustrated me. I'm glad we have a cafeteria at all. I figure you can always go out and get whatever else you want, but if you don't feel like going out, it's ok to pay a little extra for the convenience.
But the big thought that hit me was this: what is something worth? If the elevator were to break down right now, my omelet would suddenly be worth more than four dollars. Eight hours later...who knows what it might be worth?
Sometimes you just have to spoil yourself. My two favorite times for that are during my waking hours, and while sleeping.
Today it was during lunchtime. I went to my favorite restuarant, the Illusions Cafe, a great Thai place just down the road from my office. Look how beautiful this lunch is! The little dish of sauce is sitting on the four bacon-wrapped deep-fried shrimp sticks, which are standing out of half an orange. And it tasted as beautiful as it looks.
I just don't get it. The salmon flavor is there...but nothing else enjoyable about salmon. The texture is awful. Can I just fry it in a little olive oil, get a cripsy edge on it, and put it back in the roll? It just feels like a lost opportunity: it would taste so good cooked (and then allowed to cool again, of course....)
But each time I try it, I enjoy it a little more. I'm not sure yet if my reluctance is mental or if sushi is just not for me.
